The subject of today's portrait is Arike Ogunbowale, college basketball star and up-and-coming point guard for the Dallas Wings. Ogunbowale was born in Milwaukee to Nigerian parents of Yoruba descent. She attended Divine Savior Holy Angels (Lana's alma mater, go Dashers!) and helped bring them the WIAA Division I title in 2015. She was named "Wisconsin Miss Basketball" that same year. She attended Notre Dame and helped lead the team to victory in the NCAA Division I Woman's Basketball Tournament in 2018, making winning shots in the semifinal and final games. After that stunning performance, the Atlantic Coast Conference named her Athlete of the Year across all sports.
In 2019 she was taken as the 5th overall pick in the WNBA draft by the Dallas Wings. That year she was 3rd overall in scoring and named to the All-Rookie team. Although her career was temporarily sidelined by the pandemic, we expect to see great things from her in the future. If you are already jonesing for basketball after the incredible Bucks run, the WNBA season is going strong and we have another hometown star to cheer for!
