Famous Wisconsin Artist Georgia O'Keefe

Today’s WI Famous portrait is of American Modernist Artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. She was born in Sun Prairie, WI on a dairy farm. She studied at The Art Institute of Chicago and The Art Students League of NY. She married photographer Alfred Stieglitz who put on Georgia’s first show in 1916.

Their marriage was tumultuous with Stieglitz’s many affairs, causing O’Keeffe to have a breakdown in 1933. She relocated to New Mexico permanently in 1949 after Stieglitz’s death. She continued to paint and then learned to sculpt from sculptor Juan Hamilton when her eyesight failed. She passed away in 1986.
